چکیده

We review case studies of diffusion in nanocrystalline ceramics, i. e. polycrystalline non-metallic materials with average grain sizes typically in the range from 5 nm to 50 nm. The experimental methods applied are on the one hand tracer diffusion or conductivity methods which are sensitive to macroscopic transport, on the other hand NMR techniques which, complementarily to the previous ones, give access to microscopic diffusion parameters like atomic hopping rates and jump barrier heights. In all cases the diffusion properties of the samples, whether single phase systems or composites, are dominated by their grain boundaries and interfacial regions, respectively. In principle, all experimental techniques allow one to discriminate between contributions to the diffusion from the crystalline grains and those from the interfacial regions. Corresponding examples are presented for SIMS and impedance measurements on oxygen conductors. NMR studies for various nanocrystalline lithium ion conductors reveal that two lithium species with different diffusivities are present. Comparison with the coarse grained counterparts shows that the slower ions are located inside the crystallites and the faster ones in the structurally disordered interfacial regions. Investigations on composite materials exhibit phenomena which can be explained by the percolation of fast diffusion pathways being formed by the interfaces between the two components. Complex diffusion behavior of oxygen in nanocrystalline BaTiO3 ceramics.

(18)O/(16)O exchange annealing and subsequent Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) analysis is used to investigate oxygen transport in dense, nanocrystalline (average grain size d ≈ 300 nm) ceramics of nominally un-doped BaTiO3. Isotope penetration profiles are obtained as a function of temperature, 973 < T/K < 1173, at an oxygen activity aO2 = 0.20 and as a function of oxy...

Diffusion in Nanocrystalline Solids

Enhanced atomic migration was an early observation from experimental studies into nanocrystalline solids. This contribution presents an overview of the available diffusion data for simple metals and ionic materials in nanocrystalline form. It will be shown that enhanced diffusion can be interpreted in terms of atomic transport along the interfaces, which are comparable to grain boundaries in co...

Synthesis of nanocrystalline BaTiO3 ceramics via hydrothermal condition and structural characterization by HRTEM and SAED

In the present work, we report a suitable approach for the preparation of BaTiO3 nanostructures via the hydrothermal condition using Dolapix ET85 as surfactant. The powders were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning election microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), field emission transmission electron microscopy (FETEM), selected area electron diffra...

Processing and Characterization of Nanocrystalline Mica Glass-Ceramics

In order to fabrication of transparent glass-ceramics with Li-mica nano crystals, the glasses with chemical composition of 94.9 mass% Li(1+x)Mg3AlSi3(1+x)F2 (x=0.5) with 5.1 mass% MgF2 were crystallized. The glasses were fabricated via the conventional melt-quenching technique. Mica crystals were precipitated in the glass phase by later heat treatment. Glass samples had glass transition tempera...
